Artist Statement (Noah Kang, class of 2027): Tairyō (大漁 in Japanese) translates to “Big Catch”. One of Japan's most popular reasons for tourism is because of its exquisite "big catch" of seafood cuisine. However, the “big catch” is also that with the cuisine's rising popularity, it will eventually lead to major issues like overfishing which can both badly harm the ocean ecosystem as well as plunder the supply of fish that we can consume. The importance of this mural is to serve as a reminder that we must reduce overfishing and let nature replenish itself from time to time.
Interestingly enough, the mural that was on this wall before I replaced it with mine was also Japanese-themed, being centered around a garden in Kyoto.
